c1910 Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen / Beautiful Ethel Larcombe Art Nouveau Design to the Boards / Antique Hardback Book In Good Condition

Here is a lovely antique hardback copy of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey. Undated but research shows it would have been published around 1910 by Blackie and Sons Ltd of London, and indeed there is an inked inscription dated 1913 on the front free endpaper. Has an absolutely gorgeous Art Nouveau design on the front board and to the spine. Designed by Ethel Larcombe under the direction of Talwin Morris, Art Director at the Glasgow-based publishers Blackie & Son. 

Opens onto the above-mentioned inked inscription on the front free endpaper but otherwise there is no other writing or markings of previous ownership. The pages are clean and tightly bound on the inside, with some tanning to the endpapers. Gapes at the gutter in one place near the beginning where the pages protrude at the fore-edge a little, with one page having creased corners and a little tanning. Has a black and white frontispiece, else unillustrated.

Bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with orange and cream Art Nouveau decoration. The front board has remained very bright, and the plain blue rear board is also excellent. The colours on the spine have faded a good deal in comparison to the front, but the gilt title plate remains shiny bright. 

A very clean, tight and smart copy.
