1951 Large Volume of Thornton's Temple of Flora / A Beautiful Reproduction of the Original With 12 Wonderful Colour Plates and 24 Collotype

Here is a beautiful reproduction of Thornton's Temple of Flora. A very large book with twelve spectacular colour plates and twenty-four in black and white collotype. Published in 1951 by Collins, London. This is a presentation copy given by The Zoological Society of London to the former British Member of Parliament Airey Neave. Has a wonderful calligraphic dedication to him opposite the half-title page (see photos). In good condition and with the original scarce dust wrapper.

The illustrations in this book are absolutely stunning and a quick search of Etsy will find them often reproduced as prints.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. Has an armorial bookplate of Neave's on the front paste down. With some mild spotting to the endpapers. A few of the tissue guards have some mild creases. All of the plates are present as called for and in good condition.

Boards are super having been well protected by the dust jacket.

The wrapper design and label is based on that used for the rare original parts in which The Temple of Flora was first issued. It has some edge wear rubbing with a few small chips and loss, mostly to the corners and spine ends (see final close-up photo), but overall very clean and smart for a wrapper protecting such a large volume.
