Here is a first edition copy of The Ring of the Niblung by Richard Wagner. Beautifully illustrated by Arthur Rackham. A large format vintage hardback published in 1939 by William Heinemann, London. With twelve colour plates (see photos) plus Rackham line drawings to each section. The book is in good condition, with some wear to the jacket which has now been repaired on the inside and looks smart in a protective plastic sleeve. Scarce in the jacket, which rarely survives in this edition.
The Ring of the Nibelung is a cycle of four German-language epic music dramas composed by Richard Wagner. The works are based loosely on characters from Germanic heroic legend, namely Norse legendary sagas and the Nibelungenlied.
Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound, with a fair amount of spotting on the outside edges (see photos). With lovely illustrated endpapers which have a small inked inscription at the top of the fore-edge. All of the super colour plates are present as called for.
Blue boards are in good condition having been well protected by the jacket.
The dust wrapper itself has some wear. There are some nicks and tears which have now been stabilised on the reverse inside with professional bookseller's tape. There is some loss to the top of the spine (shown in the photos), and a few small chips along the edges and corners. For a light coloured jacket it has stayed clean and bright. It has now been protected for the future by the addition of a removable plastic sleeve.
