1921 First Edition Rilla of Ingleside by LM Montgomery / McClelland and Stewart Ltd, Toronoto / In Good Condition / Scarce Antique Hardback

Thrilled to find this first edition copy of Rilla of Ingleside by LM Montgomery. Published in 1921 by McClelland and Stewart, Limited of Toronto. A scarce hardback in good condition.

The final novel in L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables series, Rilla of Ingleside is a poignant departure from the earlier books’ whimsy and romance. Set during World War I, it follows Anne and Gilbert Blythe’s youngest daughter, Bertha Marilla “Rilla” Blythe, as she comes of age in a world turned upside down by war.

It is of historical significance because it is the only Canadian novel written from a woman’s perspective about WWI by a contemporary of the events. The book was ground-breaking for its early mention of the Gallipoli campaign and the ANZACs.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound, with just the occasional mark. Has some staining to the bottom rear board corner and to the corners of the last few pages (see photos). This copy has not been written in, and there are no other markings of previous ownership. Has a colour frontispiece, else unillustrated as published.

Dark navy-blue cloth over boards have a paste down to the front and gilt titles to the spine. Again in very good order, the paste down being ever so slightly rubbed. With some mild rubbing and rounding to the corners and spine ends. Has the odd faint mark to the spine. There are two condition points to note with the back board, being some fading to the top corner and the above-mentioned staining to the bottom corner. Overall very bright, tight and smart.
