1921 Fabre's Book of Insects by Mrs R Stawell / First Edition, Hodder & Stoughton, London / Wonderful Colour Illustrations by Detmold
A wonderfully illustrated, large and comprehensive antique book. This is a first edition copy of Fabre's Book of Insects Re-Told From a Translation of Souvenirs Entomologiques by Mrs Rudolph Stawell. Published in 1921 by Hodder & Stoughton, London. With twelve colour plates by Detmold. Inside the book is in super condition, several of the pages have never been cut open and so it is quite likely that it has never been read. With a bit of wear to the cream boards, detailed below.
Fabre's Book of Insects is a non-fiction book that talks about insects in real life, mythology and folklore. Contents: The Sacred Beetle; The Cicada; The Praying Mantis; The Glow Worm; A Mason Wasp; The Psyches; The Self-Denial of the Spanish Copris; Two Strange Grasshoppers; Common Wasps; The Adventures of a Grub; The Cricket; The Sisyphus; The Capricorn; Locusts; The Anthrax Fly.
Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound with some tanning and spotting to the edges. With some mildly creased bottom corners, and a small nick to the bottom of the frontispiece and tissue guard. This copy has not been written in and there are no other markings of previous ownership. All of the twelve beautiful colour plates are present and in top order. As mentioned above a couple of the opening pages have never been cut open along the top edge. I have left them like this so the new owner can enjoy opening them from themselves as an original reader would have done in 1921.
Cream cloth covered boards have ornate gilt decoration to the front and spine, and a blind-stamped illustration on the back. This book is 104 years old and so has inevitably picked up some wear but still remains very attractive. Has some rubbing to the cloth around the edges of the front and back, including some rubbing to the gilt to the top corner of the front titles. With some small indent dots at the bottom of the front board. The spine is in excellent condition, clean and bright - with just a small split to the cloth at the head. Very tightly bound with no cracked hinges.
