Here is a extensively illustrated, large-format antique Polar exploration book. Fighting the Polar Ice by Anthony Fiala. Being the first English edition, published in 1907 by Hodder & Stoughton, London. With numerous black and white photos, has artwork, diagrams, maps and a large fold-out map. The contents are in excellent condition - with some fading to the boards being the main condition point to note. Condition in detail below.

Fighting the Polar Ice chronicles the harrowing Ziegler Polar Expedition of 1903–1905. Fiala, an American explorer and photographer, led this ambitious Arctic mission, which aimed to reach the North Pole but was ultimately thwarted by brutal conditions and logistical challenges.

The book vividly details the crew’s battle against extreme cold, shifting ice floes, and isolation. It’s not just a tale of exploration—it’s a study in endurance, leadership, and the limits of human resilience. Fiala’s narrative offering a rare window into early 20th-century polar exploration.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has an inked inscription on the front free endpaper dated Xmas 1908. With toning along the closed top edge

Green sturdy cloth covered boards have decoration to the front and spine, and gilt titles. The main CONDITION POINT to note with this copy is a good amount of fading to the cloth on the back (see final photo), and also to the bottom front corner to a lesser degree. Otherwise clean and smart, with shiny gilt titles and just some mild rubbing to the corners and spine ends.
