1904 Bats - A Special Edition Taken From The Mammals of Great Britain and Ireland by JG Millais / Richly Illustrated Large Hardback

The Mammals of Great Britain and Ireland is an extensive three volume set of books. From this volume a small number of special editions were taken focusing on one or two creatures. This sub-volume concerns bats. There is another sub-volume concerning voles etc.

This is a large book published in 1904 by Longman's Green & Co., London. The bat special edition was only produced in a print-run of 1025 copies of which this one is numbered 480 (see photos). It is beautifully illustrated with ten photogravures and nine black and white plates.

Contents: Order Cheiroptera; Family Rhinophidae; Genus Rinolophus; The Greater Horseshoe Bat; The Lesser Horseshoe Bat; Family Vespertilionodae; Genus Barbastrelle; Genus Plecotus; The Long-Eared Bat; Genus Vespertilio; The Serotine; The Parti-Coloured Bat; Genus Pterygistes and Pipistrellus; The Noctule; Leisler's Bat; The Pipistrelle or Common Bat; Genus Myotis; Daubenton's Bat; Natterer's Bat; Beichstein's Bat; The Whiskered Bat; The Mouse Coloured Bat.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound with no writing or marks and just the occasional spot. Gilt edged along the top and with some mild tanning to the other two edges. The illustrations and plates are in top order and are absolutely superb. PLEASE NOTE the index and table of illustrations is not correct for this volume as it applies to the larger volume set from which this "Bat" special edition is taken as a supplementary copy.

In dark blue/black cloth covered boards with gilt titles. With a fair amount of shelf wear scuffs and scratches to the cloth and the odd mark to the front board but the binding is good and strong.
