1898 Farthest North by Fridtjof Nansen in Two Volumes / George Newnes, London / Beautifully Bound / Numerous Illustrations and Fold-Out Map
From just one year after first publication here is an 1898 edition of Fridtjof Nansen's Farthest North. Published in two volumes by George Newnes, London. With numerous black and white illustrations, portraits and a fold-out map. In good condition.
Farthest North chronicles Nansen's ambitious and harrowing Arctic expedition from 1893 to 1896, which aimed to reach the North Pole by harnessing the natural drift of the Arctic ice. The expedition was both a scientific endeavour and a remarkable feat of endurance, vividly detailed in Nansen's own words.
The Fram Expedition (1893–1896)
Nansen's plan was unconventional. He believed that the currents of the Arctic Ocean would carry a ship, if properly designed, closer to the North Pole than anyone had ever reached before. To achieve this, he commissioned the construction of a specially designed vessel, the Fram, built to withstand the pressure of being frozen in and carried along with the pack ice.
Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. With three inscriptions on the front endpaper of Volume I and one inscription to Volume II. With spotting to the early and last couple of pages in each volume. Has the original fold-out chart/map of the North Polar regions at the end of Volume I. The map has a couple of closed tears at the edges (see final photos). Gapes at the gutter in one place in Volume II but the binding of the text book is very good and tight. Otherwise contents very good indeed. All edges are shiny gilt.
Beautifully bound in petrol blue cloth covered boards with ornate decoration to the fronts and spines. Again in very good order. With some light rubbing to boards, corners and to spine ends. The decoration on the fronts is shiny bright. The gilt on the spines has dulled a little in comparison. These are extremely eye-catching volumes on display.
