An utterly charming book. Country Stories by Mary Russell Mitford, published in 1896 by Seeley & Co., Limited of London. In very good condition for an antique book of 129 years old with delightful illustrations throughout by George Morrow (see photos).
Mary Russell Mitford is best known for her sketches of village scenes and vividly drawn characters based upon life in Three Mile Cross, a hamlet in the parish of Shinfield, near Reading in Berkshire, where she lived in the early 1800s. Country Stories was originally written in 1837.
Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. With mild spotting to the early pages and then just occasionally in the text. All edges are shiny gilt - sparkly bright, with one scuff on the top edge.
In beautiful dark green cloth covered boards with extremely ornate gilt decoration. The front depicts an apple picking scene and four gorgeous rabbits. With very little wear to the boards or spine. Just some slight rubbing to the corner tips and spine ends, and a couple of very mild bumps around the edges - all minor. The dark green colour is strong and un-faded with shiny, bright gilt decoration.
An eye-catching book on display. Your antique copy of Country Stories will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message to the parcel.
