FIRST EDITION The Professor by Currer Bell (Charlotte Bronte) / 1857 Smith, Elder & Co. London / Re-backed / In Good Condition / First Issue

I am thrilled with this find of a First Edition, First Printing copy of Charlotte Bronte's The Professor. Definitely one for the Bronte collector. Published in 1857 under her pseudonym of Currer Bell by Smith, Elder & Co., London. Scarce in this one-volume original publisher's binding. In good condition. Re-backed, the contents are in great order. Condition in detail below.

Walter E Smith in his "The Bronte Sisters. A Bibliographical Catalogue of First and Early Editions 1846-1860" states that "719 copies were bound up thus 'on or before 30 June 1859'." The first edition was also published in two separate volumes. In this copy which is one of the above 719 copies, both volumes are bound together in one volume with both of their original 1857 dated title pages.

All condition points are present that are required to show it is a first edition, first printing: In Volume I: on page 21, the last letters in the last words on lines 1-2 are transposed. In Volume II: on pages 58 and 221, the full-stop is missing after the title headline; on page 99, the "p" in "place" is missing in line 3; on page 118, the "f" is missing from "of" in line 7; on page 223, the first "2" is faint. Inside the contents are in very good order. Pages are clean and tightly bound. With just the occasional spot, brown blemish and some folded over corners. Opens onto new cream endpapers. Has a pencilled name on the half-title page which has been erased but can still be partially discerned. No other writing, inscriptions or other markings of previous ownership. With a small nick also to the bottom of the half-title page. 

In the original publisher's dark green cloth covered boards with blind stamped decoration to the front and back, and gilt titles to the spine. The green cloth has kept a good un-faded colour, with some lightly rubbed areas. Has some rubbing and fraying around the outside edges to reveal boards beneath in a few places. The re-backed spine has lost a little of the gilt border at the head and tail. The gilt titles remain bright.
