Here is a charming antique hardback copy of Castles and Their Heroes by Barbara Hutton. Undated but would have been published around 1900 by Griffith Farran & Co., London. With six black and white illustrated plates by Georgina Bowers, and decorative chapter head and tail pieces. Lovely decorative cloth boards.

Barbara Hutton, better known as Mrs Alexander, was a prolific Victorian novelist whose historical and moral tales were widely read in the 1880s–1890s. Castles and Their Heroes blends romanticised medieval history with instructive storytelling, making it a classic example of the illustrated gift books of the era.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has a prize bookplate on the front paste down, along with a name and address label. The details have been partially obscured in the photo for data protection. Another partially removed label to the front free endpaper. Has a couple of creased corners. All edges are shiny gilt.

Olive-green cloth over boards have orange accenting and gilt decoration. With crusades era soldiers on the front in gilt, and a medieval knight on the spine. Again in top order. Just a little rubbing to the cloth on the corners and spine ends. An eye-catching history book.
