c1863 England's Battles By Sea and Land : 2 Large Antique Books

Here are two large and authoritative, leather-bound antique volumes. England's Battles by Sea and Land. Undated but published in the early 1860s by The London Printing and Publishing Company Ltd. With many engravings and portraits. Being four volumes, bound here into two books. In very good condition - more details below.

A sweeping Victorian military history. One of the publisher’s major “subscription-style” illustrated histories—large quarto volumes, heavily illustrated, and often sold in parts before being bound.

The four volumes break down as follows:

Vol I: History of the Wars Caused by the French Revolution 1792-1812.

Vol II: History of The French War From 1812, To Its Close; of Other Wars In Which England Has Been Engaged to AD 1840; And Retrospective View of England's Battles By Sea and Land From 55 BC to the French Revolution AD 1792.

Vol III: History of England's Campaigns in India and China; And of the Indian Mutiny, 1857-1859.

Vol IV: History of the Volunteer Movement, 1858-1863 and of the War With Russia, 1854-1856.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound with no writing or inscriptions. Just the occasional spot. Also a couple of the plates have some staining to the edges. Volume I has creasing to some of the bottom corners.

These large books are bound in green Moroccan leather with green dimpled cloth sides. Very firmly bound. They have a fair amount of rubbing to the green cloth on the sides, to remove the surface green. The dark green leather has also rubbed on the corners and the surface has peeled in a few places, most notable on the front of Volume II (see photos).

Spines have four raised bands which have gilt tooled decoration. Some scuffs to the leather. The gilt has remained shiny and bright. A couple of imposing volumes.
