1954 FIRST EDITION Alice's Adventures in Wonderland plus Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll - Illustrated by Mervyn Peake

Here is a scarce first edition copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll. Published in 1954 by Allan Wingate, London. This edition marks the first time the superb Mervyn Peake illustrations were published in hardback in the UK. Highly sought-after by Peake collectors. The book is in excellent condition. It still has the original scarce dust jacket which does have some wear, detailed below.

Peake’s interpretation of Wonderland is markedly different from Tenniel’s Victorian originals. Being more surreal, angular, and psychologically charged. With a post‑war sensibility—slightly darker, more expressionistic. There are 65 illustrations, including a full‑page frontispiece and a red vignette on the title page. Plus the illustrated dust jacket.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has an inscription on the front free endpaper, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. Tanning and spotting to the closed outside edges.

The dust wrapper has a few faint marks (including a faint brown circular mark on the front), and some light scratches but is overall clean and smart. The main CONDITION POINT being some chips with small loss and a tear to the top of the spine, and some small chips to the corners.
