1926 The Story of King Arthur and His Knights - Richly Illustrated Antique Book

Here is an absolutely beautifully illustrated antique hardback copy of The Story of King Arthur and His Knights by Howard Pyle. Published in 1926 by Charles Scribner's Sons. Contents are in top order, with some marks to the cloth - condition in detail below.

Pyle adapted his stories heavily from Sir Thomas Malory's 1485 work Le Morte d'Arthur, alongside Lord Tennyson's Idylls of the King. The narrative is distinctly written in Pyle's signature "mock-archaic" style, using elevated, older English sentence structures to immerse the reader in a romanticised medieval world.

The defining feature of the Charles Scribner's editions is Pyle's legendary pen-and-ink illustrations. Pyle—often called the "Father of American Illustration"—utilised a woodcut-inspired style with bold outlines and intricate textures. This 1926 printing features these iconic full-page illustrations alongside decorative headpieces, initial capital letters, and tailpieces that frame the start and end of chapters

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound with no inscriptions or markings of previous ownership. Mild scattered spotting - but minor. The closed top edge has some toning. Tanning to fore-edge.

Mustard-yellow cloth over boards have black, red and gold heraldic decoration to the front upper board and spine. Has some faint staining marks to the cloth and a few small brown blemishes (see photos). The decoration on the front remains bright, but the titles on the spine have faded a bit by comparison. The binding is good, tight and square with no cracked hinges.
