1923 Stories From The Arabian Nights With Illustrations by Edmund Dulac - Antique Book

Here is a vintage hardback copy of Stories From The Arabian Nights Re-Told by Laurence Housman, With Illustrations by Edmund Dulac, 1923 Hodder & Stoughton Limited, for Boots Pure Drug Co., Ltd. With a colour frontispiece and nineteen further beautiful tipped-in mounted colour plates all by Dulac (see photos). An extremely attractive copy, scarce in the original dust wrapper. The book and contents are excellent, with some wear to the wrapper. Condition in detail below.

Edmund Dulac was one of the great figures from the Golden Age of Illustration. Dulac's most famous works of art include illustrations for Arabian Nights, Sleeping Beauty, Stories from Hans Christian Andersen and the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. These works today are hugely collectable.

The contents are clean, bright and tightly bound. Has an owner's stamp to the front paste down, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. A few faint dark handling marks - but minor. Mild tanning and spotting to the closed outside edges. All of the colour plates are present as called for, and are absolutely delightful. In addition there are also black line drawn illustrations and decoration at the beginning and end of some of the stories. There is a small nick to the fore-edge of a page where one plate is mounted.

Rust-brown cloth over boards have also fared very well over the years. The front board has a black stamped double frame around the outside. With gilt and maroon stamped titles and vignettes. No real sign of any wear having been well protected by the dust jacket.

The dust jacket itself has picked up some wear but has remained in pretty good condition for being over one hundred years old. It has a paste down illustration on the front. Front and back are in good condition, with a few faint dark marks and a little edge wear. Some chips and small loss to the corners and spine head, with a bit more loss at the spine tail and bottom front corner (see photos). A split to the upper spine joint. The jacket has not been price-clipped and has now been protected for the future by the addition of a removable plastic sleeve.

Boots only published books for a short period and this is an unusual edition and hard to find in such good condition.
