Here is a collection of stories from the Faeire Queene re-told by Mary MacLeod. Extensively illustrated throughout with drawings by the sculptor AG Walker. A lovely antique volume published in 1908, with some rubbing to the boards being the main condition point to note.
The Faerie Queene is an English epic poem by Edmund Spenser. Books I–III were first published in 1590, and then republished in 1596 together with books IV–VI. The poem follows several knights as a means to examine different virtues, and though the text is primarily an allegorical work, it can be read on several levels of allegory, including as praise (or, later, criticism) of Queen Elizabeth I.
Contents: The Red Cross Knight; The Good Sir Guyon; The Legend of Britomart; The Squire of Low Degree; The Adventures of Sir Artegall; Sir Calidore, Knight of Courtesy.
Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound with just the occasional small brown blemish. Tanning to the endpapers. With a fold to the top of the front free endpaper. Has an inked name at the top of the half-title page. The top edge is gilt - this has some spotting. The other two sides untrimmed - these also have spotting where they protrude. With 87 superb black line-drawn illustrations which brilliantly evoke an age of chivalry.
Mustard brown cloth covered boards have an illustration of a lady with a lion on the front, with a knight killing a dragon to the spine. The covers have rubbed to remove some of the mustard colouring in places (see photos), otherwise clean and bright. The gilt titles remain shiny. The rear board also has rubbing to the cloth, otherwise clean.
