Here is a delightful illustrated antique book. An Old Fashioned Christmas Eve being selections from Washington Irving's Christmas at Bracebridge Hall. Papered boards, with colour tipped-in illustrations by the popular illustrator Cecil Aldin. Undated but would have been published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1908. Washington Irving played a pivotal role in shaping how Christmas is celebrated in America. Through his writings—especially Old Christmas in The Sketch Book —he revived old English traditions of feasting, hospitality, and merriment, and helped popularize St. Nicholas, laying the groundwork for the modern Santa Claus.

Inside this copy the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound with no writing or markings of previous ownership. All six tipped-in colour plates are present as called for, and there are also line drawings. A couple of plates have folded corners.

The paper boards have the odd faint dark mark and a little rubbing in places - but minor. It is possible that there has been a little repair to the spine where it meets the back board - where there has been a little cracking. But this is very hard to spot and the joint is good and strong.
