1904 The Gods of the Egyptians or Studies in Egyptian Mythology in Two Volumes - Illustrated Antique Book Set

In very good condition, here is an antique two-volume set of The Gods of the Egyptians or Studies in Egyptian Mythology by EA Wallis Budge. Being a first edition set published in 1904 by Methuen & Co., London. Two large and comprehensive volumes. With 98 absolutely superb colour plates (including double-page and fold-out), plus 131 illustrations in the text. In addition the book is full of hieroglyphic texts. Condition in detail below.

One of the great monumental Egyptological reference works of the early 20th century. It remains highly collectible for its large format, profuse illustration, and its role in shaping early modern understanding of Egyptian religion. Presenting Budge’s encyclopaedic survey of Egyptian deities, myths, cults, and religious texts. First edition sets such as this are prized for their colour plates and extensive hieroglyphic material (often with interlinear transliteration and translation.)

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. With spotting throughout the text. Inked inscriptions to the front paste downs, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. The colour plates are superb - being really bright and colourful. The five-fold-out plate is present and in top order. Mildly cracked hinges to reveal webbing. Giving the front board of Volume I and the rear board of Volume II a mild wobble, but the binding of the text blocks remain very good and strong. Tanning and spotting to closed outside edges.

Red cloth over boards have intricate blind-stamped decoration to the fronts, and gilt to spines. With some bumping to corners. Mild rubbing to cloth on the spine ends. Some white marks on Volume I and black marks to Volume II, but nothing too noticeable apart from the black line to the spine of Volume II. Has some scuffs and light stain marks to the rear boards. Gilt titles remain bright, and these are striking volumes.
