1903 The Call of The Wild by Jack London - SCARCE Early Edition - Illustrated Antique Book

In very good condition, here is an early copy of The Call of The Wild by Jack London. From the same year as the very first editions. Published simultaneously in the US and the UK in July 1903. This copy is a first UK edition, fifth impression from December of that year. (Note the title page says 1904, it was the custom for publishers when books were published in December to mark the title page with the following year's date, but the verso of the title page clearly states publication date as December 1903). Beautifully illustrated by Goodwin and Bull and with further decoration by Hooper. Striking design to the boards. The US edition was exactly the same design, but in green, not blue. Scarce in this early UK edition. Condition in detail below.

Inside the pages are tightly bound, with the occasional faint dark handling mark. Opens with illustrated endpapers. There are many more two-tone decorations like the endpapers, plus colour plates and colour illustrations in the text. Has an inked-inscription from 1903 on the half-title page. With a couple of small ink marks to the bottom of the title page, with a little transferring onto the frontispiece opposite. Some toning along the closed top edge.

In dark-blue ribbed cloth. With red, black and white decoration to the front and spine, and gilt titles. Some rubbing to the surface blue in the bottom front corner, and slightly above the titles. A couple of faint marks on the back. Some rubbing to the cloth on the corners and spine ends to reveal boards beneath in an couple of places. Slight rubbing to the illustration on the spine in comparison to the bright front. The gilt titles are shiny, and this is an eye-catching copy.
