1902 Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen / The Hampshire Edition / R Brimley Johnson, London / Scarce Beautiful Antique Edition / Good Condition

Here is a scarce and beautiful antique copy of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey. Published in 1902 by R Brimley Johnson, London. 

Dark blue cloth covered boards have ornate decoration with a lot of symbolism. Hampshire is the county in which Jane Austen lived for most of her life. Featuring blind-stamped stags from the Austen family crest on the front, and a blind-stamped Winchester cathedral (where Austen lies buried) on the back. At the top of the front board is the seal of Hampshire in gilt and those of its most important towns: Southampton and Portsmouth, on either side. On the spine is a stamped "JA" monogram. The rear board has a few light marks (see photo 2), and there are a few light spots on the front. There is some mild rubbing to the cloth on the corners and spine ends. The blue and gilt on the spine have dulled a little in comparison to the bright front but overall this is a very attractive Austen edition.

Inside the book opens onto map endpapers of the main venues that appear in Northanger Abbey. The front and rear free endpapers have tanned. With some tanning also along the closed top edge. Pages inside have the occasional brown blemish otherwise clean and smart. With creasing to the corners of some pages at the end of the book.
