1901 "Sense and Sensibility" Book: Antique Nouveau Edition, Illustrated

One of the most distinctive and collectable bindings of any Jane Austen edition, designed by A Turbayne. Here is a copy of Sense and Sensibility published by Macmillan and Co. Ltd of London in 1901. An extremely scarce and hard to get hold of edition, being one of the earliest of the illustrated versions. With 40 line drawings by Hugh Thomson which are some of the best in any edition of the Austen novels and with a full Introduction by Austin Dobson. A lovely book.

Inside the contents are in very good condition. Has spotting to the endpapers and to the frontispiece tissue, but none through the text. With a neatly inked inscription on the front free endpaper dated 1902, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. All edges are shiny gilt and this has picked up a few faint scuffs on the top edge. Hinges just starting but the binding of the text book is good and strong. The book has developed a very slight lean over time.

With striking orange/rust brown cloth covered boards with dark brown floral Art Nouveau decoration and gilt lettering. Again in good order. With some rubbing to the cloth on the spine ends and joints. With a couple of very faint dark marks on the back - but minor.
