In very good condition, here is a scarce antique hardback copy of The Three Witches by Mrs Molesworth. Being a first edition, (undated) but published in 1900 by W&R Chambers, London. With delightful illustrations by Lewis Baumer. Condition in detail below.

Not many of these have survived, and those that have are in poor condition compared to this copy.

The Three Witches is a classic children's novel. Molesworth being a prolific and respected Victorian writer known for her blend of realism and subtle supernatural or fairy-tale elements. The narrative follows young characters who encounter strange, whimsical, or rumoured "witch-like" figures, blending an atmospheric sense of mystery with traditional late-Victorian lessons concerning morality, duty, and imagination.

Inside the book opens with a book plate belonging to Jaqueline Hope-Nicholson. She was a genealogist, heraldic artist and impassioned costumier coordinating vast outdoor pageants and innumerable amateur theatricals, but her greatest interest was in the Stuart kings, primarily Charles II. Has a pencilled inscription by her on the opposite front free endpaper.

Some tanning to endpapers, otherwise pages are clean and tightly bound. Spotting to the edges, and toning also along the closed top edge. The book has developed a mild lean with time.

Rust-brown cloth over boards have three ladies (witches) to the front, back and spine. Has a little light scuffing to the boards, with one area which has more scuffing - that is just above the "Illustrated by Lewis Baumer" at the bottom of the front board. Rubbing to the cloth on the corners to reveal boards beneath at the tips. A little rubbing and rounding also to the cloth at the spine ends.
