1900 Cranford PLUS Mary Barton by Elizabeth Gaskell / Gresham, London / Highly Sought After Talwin Morris Binding / Lovely Antique Book

Here is a beautiful and highly sought after late Victorian edition of TWO of Elizabeth Gaskell's novels: Cranford which is bound here also with the novel Mary Barton. Published by The Gresham Publishing Company, London in 1900. Desirable due to the extremely attractive Talwin Morris designed arts and crafts peacock feather pattern on boards and spine. Further it is also illustrated with a black and white frontispiece and five black and white plates (see photos).

Inside the pages have the occasional brown blemish and dark mark, with one small black ink mark, but the vast majority are bright and tightly bound. The outside edges have some tanning and the odd spot. Cracks open at the hinge to reveal webbing at the beginning, but the binding remains good and strong. All of the black and white plates are present as called for and in super condition. This copy has not been written in and there are no other markings of previous ownership. Over time the book has developed a mild lean.

Beautiful blue decorative cloth covered boards have the peacock feather design to the front, back and spine. With a few faint marks to the dark blue. The spine has dulled just a little in comparison to the bright front. Has rubbing to the cloth at the corners to reveal boards beneath at the tips (see final two photos), and also some rubbing and fraying to the cloth at the spine ends.
