1899 Peg Woffington by Charles Reade / George Allen, London / Beautifully Illustrated by Hugh Thomson / 125 Years Old / In Good Condition

A beautiful book both inside and out. In good condition here is a lovely antique copy of Peg Woffington by Charles Reade, published in 1899 by George Allen of London. Wonderfully decorated and illustrated throughout by Hugh Thomson (see photos). The decoration, with illustrative capital letters and headers at the start of each chapter is the same in design as the famous Jane Austen Peacock edition of Pride and Prejudice. 

Peg Woffington is an 1853 novel. It was inspired by the popular stage play Masks and Faces which Charles Reade had co-written with Tom Taylor the previous year. Reade portrayed the London success of the Irish actress Peg Woffington who had actually been a real person who had lived between 1720-1760, and it featured other prominent figures of the days such as David Garrick.

Inside the pages are in good condition being clean and bright. Has some tanning to the early and last few pages. With an inked name on the half-title page but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. All edges are shiny gilt - with a scratch to the gilt at the top of the fore-edge.

Very attractively bound in bright red cloth covered boards with ornate gilt decoration to the front and spine. Again in good order. The red of the spine has faded in comparison to the front and back but the gilt remains good. There are a few dark marks on the rear board. The book has developed a lean with time. The gilt decoration on the front remains shiny bright and this is an eye-catching book to display.
