1899 First Edition - The Story of the Treasure Seekers by E Nesbit / T Fisher Unwin, London / Illustrated Children's Classic

Delighted to turn up here a first edition copy of The Story of the Treasure Seekers Being The Adventures of The Bastable Children In Search of a Fortune By E Nesbit. Originally published in 1899, this copy is one of those first editions. With sixteen illustrations by Gordon Browne and Lewis Baumer plus an illustrated frontispiece.

The Story of the Treasure Seekers was one of a number of popular classic children's stories to be written by Nesbit including The Railway Children, The Phoenix and the Carpet and Five Children and It.

With partially cracked hinges at the front and back, but in no way effecting the binding of the text block which is good and strong. There is an inked inscription on an early endpaper dated 1900, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. With some faint dark marks and brown blemishes to some of the pages. With a closed tear to the edge of one leaf, but nowhere near the text. All the black and white illustrations are present as called for - the frontis tissue having some tanning. Edges shiny gilt on all sides.

In the original dark green publisher's cloth over boards, with gilt decoration to the front and spine. Rubbing to the cloth on the corners and spine ends. With a little fraying/small splits to the cloth also to the head and tail spine joints. Boards have some light rubbing and the odd light scuff. Gilt on the front is good, it has rubbed slightly more on the spine.
