1898 Spiderland by Rose Haig Thomas / Five Colour Plates Plus Many Drawings / Charming Stories For Children Based on Insects and Flowers

SCARCE. Here is a charming antique hardback collection of stories for children based on insects and flowers. Spiderland by Rose Haig Thomas was published for the author by Chiswick Press, London in 1898. With five colour plates and a number of black line drawings.

Contents: The Tree Frogs; Pistil the Peacemaker; The Spider Mother; My Lady Chrysanthemum or The Boastful Ox-Eye; The Vapourer Moth; The Wedding of the Fly Ophrys; The Impertinent Earwig and The Garrulous Greenfly; The Weevils and The Wasp; The Voracious Dragonfly and the Modest Mayfly; Thomisina Citrina The Robber Mother; The Green Caterpillar; Hymen The Worker Ant. 

Inside opens onto a pencilled inscription from 1925, but there is no other writing or markings of previous ownership. Has a few folded corner tips and the book has developed a lean over time. All five colour plates are present with their tissue guards. The tissues have tanned around the edges. The top closed edge is gilt.

Olive-green cloth covered boards have a reproduction of the spider illustration on the front, with gilt titles. With some fading to the green across the top third of the rear board. Has some mildly rolled and rubbed corners and spine ends, but minor.
