1898 Mansfield Park by Jane Austen: Scarce, Antique Illustrated Book

One of the most distinctive and collectable bindings of any Austen edition, designed by A Turbayne. Here is a copy of Mansfield Park published by Macmillan and Co. Ltd of London in 1898. An extremely scarce and hard to get hold of edition, being one of the earliest of the illustrated versions. With 40 line drawings by Hugh Thomson which are some of the best in any edition of the Austen novels and with a full Introduction by Austin Dobson. 128 years old and so has a few condition points to note, (detailed below), but remains a lovely copy.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound with just the occasional light spot. Tanning and spotting to the endpapers. One of the illustrated pages has some brown blemishes (see photos). Another page has a 2 cm closed tear to the top edge (not effecting the text). All edges are gilt and this has rubbed a little in places.

With striking orange/rust brown cloth covered boards with dark brown floral Art Nouveau decoration and gilt lettering. A few faint dark marks to the back board. Mild rubbing to the cloth on the corner tips and spine ends. With a small frayed split to the cloth at the head of the spine front joint (see photos). Otherwise decoration is bright and this is an extremely attractive book.
