1895 "Sybil" by Benjamin Disraeli: Antique Turbayne Covers, Illustrated

In excellent condition, here is a beautiful first edition thus copy of Sybil or The Two Nations by Benjamin Disraeli. Published by Macmillan and Co., London in 1895. With numerous illustrations by F Pegram and with striking Art Nouveau boards by Albert Angus Turbayne.

Looking extremely eye-catching on display.

Originally first published in 1845, Sybil dramatizes the vast divide between England’s rich and poor during the Industrial Revolution. Charles Egremont, a young aristocrat, becomes aware of the suffering of the working classes. He meets Sybil Gerard, daughter of a Chartist leader, Walter Gerard. Sybil embodies purity, virtue, and the hope of reconciliation between classes.

Opens onto super yellow peacock decorative endpapers (also by Turbayne). Has a small pencil inscription and a silver name sticker at the top of the front free endpaper (see photos - details partially obscured for data protection). Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. Shiny gilt on all sides - with a few tiny dents in the gilt on the top edge.

In striking petrol-blue cloth over boards with ornate gilt decoration to the front and spine in Turbayne's signature peacock style. Again in superb order. Just some very slight rubbing to the head of the spine - but minor. The gilt in particular is stunning on this one.
