1895 "Jacob Faithful" Antique Book: Turbayne Covers, Illustrated, Presentation Copy

In very good condition, here is a beautiful first edition thus, Presentation copy of Jacob Faithful by Captain Marryat. Published by Macmillan & Co., Limited London in 1895. With numerous illustrations by Henry Brock and with striking Art Nouveau boards by Albert Angus Turbayne.

Looking extremely eye-catching on display.

One of Frederick Marryat’s early novels, notable for its vivid depiction of Thames watermen and the bustling life along the river. It blends humour, tragedy, and nautical adventure, marking a shift from Marryat’s purely naval tales to broader social storytelling.

Opens onto super yellow decorative endpapers in Turbayne's distinctive peacock style. Has an inked name on the front free endpaper from 1896, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. Spotting to the frontispiece, tissue guard and title page, and also a few spots to the rear endpapers. With just the odd spot and brown blemish inside. Has a Presentation Copy blind stamp to the title page. Gilt edged on all sides, with some light scuffs, but minor.

In striking dark blue cloth over boards with ornate gilt decoration to the front and spine. Again in top order. Slight fading to the rear board. Mild rubbing to the corners and spine ends, and a tiny hole in the cloth on the rear spine joint. The decoration and gilt remain shiny bright and this is a very attractive book.
