1890s Tales From Shakespeare by Charles Lamb / George Routledge & Sons, London / Richly Illustrated Throughout / Antique Book

Here is a richly illustrated, antique hardback copy of Tales From Shakespeare by Charles Lamb. In a lovely green decorative binding. Undated, but would have been published by George Routledge & Sons, London in the 1890s. With 183 black and white illustrations throughout, being a mixture of full page and in-text. This copy is over 125 years old and so has a few condition points to note, detailed below, but remains a lovely copy.

The Tales are a beloved collection of adaptations that makes the works of William Shakespeare more accessible and enjoyable, especially for younger readers. Re-telling some of Shakespeare's most famous plays in prose form, simplifying the complex language while preserving the essence and charm of the original stories.

Contents: Romeo and Juliet; King Lear; Othello; Timon of Athens; Macbeth; The Merchant of Venice; The Comedy of Errors; Hamlet; The Tempest; As You Like It; Much Ado About Nothing; A Midsummer Night's Dream, Measure For Measure; The Taming of the Shrew; Twelfth Night; Pericles; The Winter's Tale; All's Well That Ends Well; The Two Gentlemen of Verona; Cymbeline; Life of Shakespeare; Chronological Order of Shakespeare's Dramas.

Inside the book lacks the blank front free endpaper and so opens directly onto the half-title page. With an inscription to the front paste down, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. Has a colour frontispiece, the remaining illustrations being in line. The frontispiece has some tanning and spotting to the tissue-guard. Has some mild spotting in the text, toning along the top and tanning to the other two sides. A few of the pages are wobbly at the bottom, but remain firmly attached at the top.

In striking bright green cloth covered boards, with decoration to the front and spine. The boards are in super condition, with no real condition points to note. There are a few small splits to the cloth at the head and tail of the spine (see close-up photo). Otherwise bright and unfaded, with shiny gilt titles. An eye-catching book on display.
