1889 First Edition A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain / Second State / Richly Illustrated / Webster & Co., New York

Here is a first edition, second state copy of A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain. Published in 1889 by Charles Webster & Co., New York. A wonderful edition, superbly illustrated throughout. This copy is 135 years old and so inevitably has some wear, detailed below, but remains a lovely copy.

Firstly for the collector the differences between the first state and second state printings are with THIS copy:
No half-title to verso of frontispiece, no "S' ornament on page 59 The King, and broken type on page 72.
Meaning that this is a second state.

Inside the book opens onto decorative endpapers with a super armorial bookplate on the front paste down. Has an elegantly inked inscription on the an early blank endpaper but no other writing. With scattered spotting in the text, the occasional brown blemish and a few handling marks. Has a partially cracked hinge at the rear but not effecting the binding of the text block which is good and strong.

Olive-green boards have decoration to the front and shiny gilt titles to front and spine. With some light staining to the boards at the bottom which has led to some bobbling up of the cloth (see final close-up photo). With mild rubbing to the cloth at the corners to reveal boards at tips, and rubbing slightly in a few areas on the front and back. With a few small splits/frays to the cloth at the head and tail of the spine.
