An absolutely charming antique edition of Charles Dickens' Christmas book The Chimes. Scarce and very collectable being 138 years old. In the Routledge Pocket Library series published by George Routledge and Sons Ltd of London in 1886. With holly designed papered boards and a red cloth spine with black title plate. An illustrated edition. Please note the POCKET-SIZED measurements of this copy below. In good condition, with wear to the top of the spine being the main condition point to note.

The Chimes is a novella first published in 1844, one year after A Christmas Carol. It is the second in Dickens' series of "Christmas books", five novellas with strong social and moral messages that he published during the 1840s. In addition to A Christmas Carol and The Chimes, the Christmas books include The Cricket on the Hearth (1845), The Battle of Life (1846), and The Haunted Man (and the Ghost's Bargain) (1848).

Inside the contents are in good condition. The pages are tightly bound, with scattered spotting through the text. Lacks the blank front free endpaper and so opens onto the half-title page. Has a cracked hinge at the front but in no way effecting the binding of the text block which is good and strong. With a lovely engraved double title page and then six further black and white illustrations. 

In very distinctive holly patterned papered boards. These have some rubbing and light chipping around the outside edges. Paper has rubbed away so that the boards are revealed on the corners. With some light scratches to the boards, but these can only really be seen by holding the book up to the light. The red cloth covered spine has tanned in comparison to the sides and there is splitting to the cloth at the top (see close-up photo). The black title plate and gilt titles remain strong.
