1883 Familiar Wild Flowers / Illustrated Victorian Antique Book (Third Series)

A beautiful, antique edition of Familiar Wild Flowers by F Edward Hulme. With forty bright colour plate illustrations, and in a gorgeous binding with hand-painted flowers on the front board. Undated, but published in 1883 by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co., London. In very good condition, with just tanning and spotting to the pages being the main condition point to note - more details below.

Hulme produced five series of his Familiar Wild Flowers over the years and this is a third series collection with forty flowers described in detail, each with an ornate decorative initial and footer and its own colour plate. Each volume stands on their own individually.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has fairly heavy tanning and spotting to the early and latter few pages, and then sporadically scattered through the text. Tanning/spotting also to outside closed edges. One page of text has a small ink smudge. All of the beautiful colour plates are in very good condition. Each has their tissue-guard in place. A couple of tissues are loose. Outside edges are speckled - as produced.

In a striking green and gold binding with hand-painted flowers on the front board. The boards are a work of art in themselves, and with each copy being hand-painted they are all unique. With gilt and black border on the front and spine. Slight rubbing to the cloth on the spine ends. With a small nick to the cloth at the spine foot. Has a slight bump to the top edge of the front board. The decoration and gilt remain sparkly bright and this is an extremely eye-catching book.
