1880s The Poetical Works of Robert Burns / George Routledge & Sons, London / Antique Book / Beautiful Decorative Binding

Here is a lovely antique copy of The Poetical Works of Robert Burns. Undated but would have been published in the 1880s by George Routledge and Sons, London. In a beautifully decorative binding. Has a frontispiece portrait plus twelve further black and white illustrations. This copy is well over 130 years old and so inevitably has some signs of age (detailed below), but remains a super copy.

Inside the pages have foxing to the frontispiece, tissue guard and title page, and then scattered spotting sporadically through the text. Has the occasional tanned page and handling mark. With a partially cracked hinge at the rear to reveal webbing but the binding of the text block is good and strong. There is an inked name on the front free endpaper but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. Also includes a Glossary of Scotticisms plus an Index of First Lines. All edges are shiny gilt.

Rust brown cloth covered boards have attractive grey and black decoration to the front, back and spine, and gilt titles. With the odd faint mark and scuffed area to the boards, and some light rubbing to the cloth at the corners and spine ends. The spine has darkened a bit in comparison to the sides but the decoration and gilt remain bright and this is an eye-catching edition to display.
