1880s The Dramatic Works of William Shakespeare - Decorative Antique Edition

In excellent condition here is a beautiful antique copy of The Dramatic Works of William Shakespeare With Copious Glossarial Notes And Biographical Notice. Undated, but would have been published in the early 1880s by Gall & Inglis, London in their Landscape series. In a gorgeous binding and with four black and white illustrations from engravings.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound - spotting just to the preliminary pages. Light pencil writing to the endpapers, but this is very hard to spot as the endpapers are dark brown. Antique purple name stamp on the verso of the frontispiece, but no other markings of previous ownership. Partially cracked hinges at the front and back, but in no way affecting the binding of the text block which is good and strong. Each page of text is in an intricately illustrated border. Gilt edged on all sides and this has remained shiny bright with some light scuffs. The illustrations are superb - an engraved frontispiece, title page plus two further illustrated plates.

In a beautiful bright red ornate binding. Cloth covered boards have a delightful decorative angel inset cut-away with gilt border. Shiny black and gilt decoration to the front and spine, and blind stamped decoration on the back. The front is in top order - sparkly bright. Rear board has a couple of light marks and one small black ink spot. The red of the spine has faded a good deal in comparison to the front and back, with some rubbing to the cloth on the spine ends. Black and gilt remain shiny bright and this is an extremely eye-catching volume to display.
