1877 Early Edition of Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy : WORN

Here is a very early edition of the novel which made Thomas Hardy famous and shifted his reputation from that of a promising young writer into a major literary figure. Far From the Madding Crowd was originally published in serialised format in 1874, with a book edition published by Smith, Elder that same year. A second edition was published from the 1874 sheets between 1874-77, and this copy is one of those. Please note this copy has a good deal of wear and some missing illustrated plates. But despite some wear it remains tightly bound and is the earliest Hardy I have yet to have had in the store.

Inside the pages open with some library stamps to the preliminaries. There is spotting, some dark handling marks and brown blemishes. A few of the pages have nicked edges or folded corners. Three of the six black and white plates are missing. Marble edged pages - the marbling has faded a good deal.

In a brown leather binding with brown papered sides. A good deal of rubbing to both, with some loss to the leather at the spine ends. Some dark ink to the front board.

The spine has five raised bands, with ornate gilt stamped decoration to the compartments. Rubbing to the raised bands.
