1876 Poems by Longfellow : Illustrated Antique Book

In good condition, here is a beautifully bound antique copy of Poems by William Cowper. In a lovely rust-brown decorative binding with ornate decoration. Undated, but with an inscription from 1876 and published by William P Nimmo, Edinburgh. Richly illustrated and with shiny gilt on all page edges. This copy is 150 years old and so has a few condition points to note, but remains a lovely poetry book.

Inside the pages have tanned but are otherwise clean and tightly bound with spotting to the preliminaries. Cracked hinge at the front to reveal webbing, and partially to the back, but not effecting the binding which is good and strong. Portrait frontispiece with tissue-guard, illustrated title page and eleven further engraved plates. Has the above-mentioned inked inscription to the front free endpaper, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership.

Deep rust-brown cloth over boards have ornate black and gilt decoration to the front and spine, with a cherub vignette. A few light scuffs to the boards - but minor. Rubbing to the corners and spine ends, with a couple of small splits and a little loss to the cloth at the head of the spine. The decoration and gilt remain shiny bright and this is a very attractive book.
