In excellent condition, here is a beautiful first edition copy of The Ivy - A Monograph, Comprising the History, Uses, Characteristics and Affinities of the Plant, and A Descriptive List of All the Garden Ivies in Cultivation. By Shirley Hibberd. Published in 1872 by Groombridge & Sons, London. With four colour chromolithographs and a number of monochrome illustrations. More details below.

A classic of botanical literature. Detailing the history, folklore, and cultivation of ivy, championing its use for both urban amateur gardens and wildlife conservation

Contents: Prefatory Observations; Historical and Literary Memoranda; Uses of the Ivy; The Cultivation of the Ivy; The Species and Varieties of Ivy; Descriptive List of Garden Ivies; Selection of Ivies, Comprising the Most Distinct and Beautiful in the Several Sections.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Mild tanning and spotting to endpapers, title page and frontispiece tissue guard. Tanning also to the pages next to the colour plates. Has an inked inscription to the front free endpaper. All edges are shiny gilt. The four chromolithographs comprise a frontispiece, extra title page, plus two full page plates.

Green cloth over boards have delightful ivy decoration to the front and spine, and bevelled edges. Mild rubbing/rounding to the cloth on the corners and spine ends. The ivy decoration is absolutely lovely, the gilt bright, and this is an extremely eye-catching book.
