In good condition here is a lovely antique edition of The Ingoldsby Legends by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually a pen-name of an English clergyman named Richard Harris Barham. Published in 1869 by Richard Bentley, London. With shiny gilt edges and dentelles, an illustrated title page and two engraved illustrations. In a full red leather binding. 154 years old.
Full title: The Ingoldsby Legends, or Mirth and Marvels is a collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poems. As a priest of the Chapel Royal, with a private income, Barham was not troubled with strenuous duties, and he had ample time to read, and to compose his stories and poems. Although the "legends" are based on folklore or other pre-existing sources they are mostly humorous parodies or pastiches.
Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. With just the occasional brown blemish or light brown stain mark. Lacks the blank front free endpaper and so opens directly onto the half-title page. This copy has not been written in and there are no other markings of previous ownership. All edges are shiny gilt, with the top edge having dulled a little in comparison with the other two sides. Has two engraved illustrations and an atmospheric decorative title-page.
In a full red leather binding with gilt tooled decoration to the front, back and spine which has four raised bands. The front has a depiction of the Jackdaw of Rheims. There are also gilt decorative dentelles on the turnovers (see photos). The red leather has rubbed at the corners, spine ends and to the spine bands. Otherwise it has fared very well with just the odd scuff and with a faint white mark on the back. The gilt has remained shiny bright.
A scarce edition. Your antique copy of The Ingoldsby Legends will be wrapped with care in tissue an ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message to the parcel if desired.
H 18 cm x W 13 cm, 468 pages, 0.61 kg. I dispatch worldwide daily from the UK. (There are just a very few countries which I am unable to ship to).
* If you would prefer for your book not to be decoratively wrapped and sent simply in the full protective packaging please add a note to the order.
