1854 The Ladies' Companion and Monthly Magazine - Illustrated Antique Book

In very good condition, here is a large antique copy of The Ladies' Companion and Monthly Magazine. Published in 1854 (Volume VI, 2nd Series). With six wonderful colour fashion plates. Condition in detail below.

The Ladies' Companion was an influential mid-Victorian British periodical that reflected the shifting social roles and domestic ideals of women in the 1850s. Published in London by Rogerson and Tuxford. Am elegantly produced monthly magazine that combined literary sophistication with practical housewifery. The magazine was highly regarded for its serialized novels, biographical sketches of notable women, poetry, and detailed needlework patterns, alongside insightful commentary on music, theatre, and the arts. A hallmark of each monthly issue was its striking, hand-coloured steel-engraved fashion plates, which meticulously documented the opulent dress trends of the early crinoline era—featuring the voluminous flounced skirts and intricate bonnets.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. In addition to the six superb large colour plates, there are also six steel engraved illustrations. The text is in double columns. With the odd nick and closed tear - but minor. There are several pressed four leaf clovers between the pages, which I have left in place.

In an olive-green leather half-binding, with marbled papered boards. Has a fair amount of rubbing and scuffing to the leather around the edges. The leather on the front panel has a small circular mark where it looks as if a sticker has been removed at some point. With four raised bands to the spine. The bands and compartments have ornate gilt stamped decoration. Red Moroccan leather title and volume plates. Again some rubbing and scuffing to the leather on the spine, but still remaining an attractive volume.
