I am delighted with this find of a wonderfully decorative Victorian edition of Cranford by Mrs Elizabeth Gaskell. Scarce in this edition which is undated but would have been published by Walter Scott Publishing Company in the 1890s. In very good condition, with fading to the spine and some tanning to the endpapers being the main condition points to note.
In delightful red cloth covered boards with beautiful black stamped ornate design and gilt title blocks.
Contents: Inside the endpapers have some tanning and spotting with the rest of the pages being clean, bright and tightly bound. Cracks open at the hinge in one place but in no way effecting the binding of the text block which is good and strong. Has a prize bookplate on the front paste down dated 1909, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. Richly illustrated and decorated throughout in black and white. All edges are shiny bright gilt.
Boards: In bright red cloth covered boards with bevelled edges. The bevelled edges have rubbed very slightly at the corners. The front board is in super condition with lovely ornate black decoration and sparkly bright gilt. The only condition point to note is the above-mentioned fading to the spine, which has carried over onto the back in a strip (see photo 2). The spine is considerably lighter than the bright red on the boards, but the decoration remains strong.
