In good condition this is a super antique edition of Tales From Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb. With sixteen superb colour plate illustrations (see photos). I've done some research and I'm still unsure who the artist is as they are unattributed. They are reminiscent of Edmund Dulac in style and definitely have a Golden Age of Illustration feel. Undated but would have been published around 1910 by Hodder & Stoughton, London.
The Tales from Shakespeare were designed to make the stories of Shakespeare's plays familiar to younger readers. Mary Lamb was responsible for the comedies, while Charles wrote the tragedies.
Inside the pages are very good being clean and tightly bound. With no writing or markings of previous ownership. The closed outside edges have some mild tanning and with a very faint small stain on the top edge, but this is very minor. Has lovely colour illustrated endpapers. With a partial crack to the hinge at the top in the front but the binding remains good and strong. All of the sixteen colour plates are present as called for with their captioned tissue guards.
The blue cloth covered boards have gilt titles and decoration to the front and spine. With just a few faint light marks and some slight tanning around the edges. The gilt has remained shiny bright and this is a smart copy.
Your antique edition of Tales From Shakespeare will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message to the parcel.
H 20.5 cm x W 16 cm, 380 pages, 0.75 kg. I dispatch worldwide daily from the UK. With the exception of a small number of countries.
* If you would prefer for your book not to be decoratively wrapped but sent simply in the protective packaging please add a note to the order.
