25 Pairs of Antique Kid Leather Gloves / Majority Un-Worn and Still in the Original Department Store Boxes and Tissue / Opera and Day Gloves

What an amazing auction find this is! A real touch of Downton Abbey here. In this collection are twenty-five pairs of antique kid-leather ladies gloves. Late Victorian and Early Edwardian. The vast majority are unworn and indeed have never even been out of their original department store boxes. They are still wrapped in their original tissue which states a number were made in Paris. The majority are white/cream and there are a mixture of long opera gloves and day gloves. There are also a few unworn dark brown opera gloves. These were formerly the property of the 1st Viscount Trenchard and have come down by descent.

Woolland Bros was a well regarded department store in Knightsbridge, London. It was situated next to Harvey Nichols and was frequented by high society and gentry at this time. I would imagine the Trenchard family placed a bulk order for gloves which arrived individually wrapped inside these boxes. Only a few pairs have ever been worn.

As unworn kid gloves they will, of course need to be stretched to fit, using a traditional glove stretcher or by soaking.

The unworn gloves are all in superb order. The long, unworn opera gloves in particular are absolutely stunning. They have a slight musty smell as you would expect from being in a box for 120 years, but nothing too obtrusive at all. With some airing or using the baking soda hack I am sure this can be alleviated.

The few pairs which have been worn may need re-stretching and some leather moisturising oil reapplied. One of the worn pairs has pearl decoration and has lost some pearls, with only one pearl remaining.

Included are four Woolland Bros boxes full of gloves, plus one light-blue embroidered material roll-up which also includes around half-a dozen pairs.
