In FINE condition, here is a rare and highly collectable copy of Shades from Jane Austen by Honoria D Marsh. Published in 1975 by Parry Jackman Limited. With a stamp showing it is number 297 of 300 copies produced in this deluxe limited edition (see photos). Bound in gorgeous chocolate brown leather and still in the original slipcase box. An extremely attractive volume.

A beautiful and unusual book. Honoria D Marsh lived in Hampshire's Austen country and was commissioned by British television to produce some artwork for the bicentenary celebration of Austen's birth. Following this she was approached to produce a book and this is the result. Marsh's interpretations and synopsis of Austen's novels are accompanied by numerous colour illustrations of her depiction of the characters. These are all wonderfully produced in colour and many are full page colour plates (see photos). The sitters for these paintings were all local Hampshire friends, acquaintances and family of the artist and many have interesting connections to Austen's family or are indeed direct descendants of the Austen family. The characters are all depicted in extremely accurate costume down to the correct year.

In addition the book contains an opening chapter "Jane Austen's Family in Silhouette" together with a table showing Jane Austen's family and "Chronology of Events During Her Lifetime" by Peggy Hickman.

The contents are in excellent condition with no signs of age or wear. This copy has no writing or other marks of previous ownership. With moiré water silk endpapers. Shiny gilt edged on all sides.

Both the chocolate brown leather on the boards and the slipcase has fared very well indeed. With just a few light scuffs - but minor. The ornate gilt decoration on the outside, and the inner decorative dentelles remain sparkly bright. A gorgeous copy.
