1974 Haunted Castles by Marc Alexander - Vintage Book

Here is a vintage first edition hardback copy of Haunted Castles by Marc Alexander. Published in 1974 by Frederick Muller Limited. Richly illustrated with black and white photos and 18th century engravings. In the original dust wrapper, which reads:

"Many of Britain's castles are haunted, and the ghosts are unique by nature of their surroundings. Casements, towers and turrets witnessed the turmoil of changing times, both political and criminal, and they hold many secrets - the ruins...once were the scenes of betrayal, murder, siege and heartbroken lovers."

Alexander meticulously cross-references supernatural tales with real-world historical events—such as bloody battles, political betrayals, and grisly executions—that gave rise to the hauntings. The book covers numerous famous fortifications and answers specific regional lore mysteries, including:

The legendary, terrifying secret of the hidden, walled-up room at Glamis Castle in Scotland;

Phantom entities and royal spectres surrounding Windsor Castle and the mysterious hunter of Windsor Great Park;

Infamous hauntings at the Tower of London, including the tragic 1816 account of a sentry encountering a phantom bear near the Jewel House;

Welsh and Irish castle legends, including the terrifying Gwrach-y-rhibyn (the Welsh hag of the mist) and the wicked spirits of Dunseverick and Malahide Castle.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound, with no inscriptions or markings of previous ownership.
