1961 The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien / George Allen & Unwin Ltd, London / Second Edition, Thirteenth Impression / Early Copy in Good Condition

In good condition, here is an early UK hardback copy of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit. Published in 1961 by George Allen & Unwin Ltd, London. Being a second edition, thirteenth impression. Often these early copies do not survive in good condition, but this copy has just some tanning to the endpapers, and some fading to the spine being the only condition points to note. The contents are in superb order, with no inscriptions or marks.

Inside - opens and closes with map endpapers drawn by Tolkien. As mentioned above these have tanned. The closed outside edges also have some mild tanning. There is then a colour frontispiece and further black line drawn illustrations also by Tolkien. Inside the pages are clean and bright with no tanning or spotting.

Olive-green cloth covered boards have dark green decoration to the front, back and spine. The green on the spine has faded in comparison to the front and back (see photo 2), and the fading has carried over a little onto the top front board and along the rear edge. With some light spotting also to the spine. Otherwise just a couple of very small marks to the boards but minor. The dark decoration on the spine remains strong and un-faded and this is a striking book to display.
