One for the Austen collector and scholar here. In excellent condition, a vintage hardback copy of Jane Austen A Critical Bibliography by RW Chapman. Being a first edition published in 1953 by Oxford at the Clarendon Press.
RW Chapman was the pre‑eminent Austen editor of the early 20th century. This is not a descriptive bibliography of Austen’s editions such as Gilson, but rather a “critical” bibliography—a curated, annotated list of secondary sources about Austen up to that date. Chapman selects works he considers critically significant, not exhaustive. Many entries include Chapman’s commentary, sometimes quoting letters or lesser‑known sources. There are approximately 179 items, arranged with scholarly clarity.
The contents are in excellent condition with clean and tightly bound pages. No writing or markings of previous ownership. Unillustrated.
In dark-blue cloth covered boards with bright gilt lettering to the spine. Again in top order. Has some light marks and a few thin scratches on the front - but minor. Overall a very smart copy indeed.
Your vintage first edition copy of Jane Austen A Critical Bibliography will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message to the parcel.
