A vintage copy of Mrs Beeton and Her Husband by Her Great Niece Nancy Spain. Being a first edition published in 1948 by Collins, London. With the original dust wrapper, which reads:

"If any of that vast majority of the public to whom Mrs Beeton is a household word, were asked to improvise a biography of her, they would vaguely imagine an old lady in Victorian frills and curls who, after being left a widow, confided to paper the results of a lifetime's experience in the kitchen. Nothing could be further from the facts. Isabella Beeton was an exceedingly handsome young woman who died in 1865 at the age of twenty eight."

Despite her association with domestic expertise, she was not a particularly accomplished cook herself. Much of the content in "Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management" was compiled from other sources and contributors. She drew on a wealth of existing knowledge, recipes, and advice to create a comprehensive guide for Victorian housewives. This approach allowed her to gather the best practices and tips from a variety of experts, making her book an invaluable resource even though she didn't personally master every skill she wrote about.

She was a pioneer of early marketing techniques. For her book "Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management," she ingeniously included advertisements, which were not as commonplace in books at the time. These ads were strategically placed within the chapters, offering products that aligned with the household management advice she provided. This not only generated additional revenue but also gave her readers practical solutions and products to consider.

In many ways, she was ahead of her time, understanding the value of integrating useful content with relevant advertising—essentially an early form of sponsored content!

Inside this copy the pages are clean and tightly bound with no writing or inscriptions. There is an indent left from an erased pencil mark at the top of the front free endpaper. Has a black and white frontispiece and one further black and white illustration. Has genealogical family-trees to the endpapers.

In the original price-clipped dust wrapper. This has picked up some wear. With some nicks and tears down from the top edge and some loss to the top rear corner and spine ends. Has mild spotting and the spine has faded a little in comparison to the front. The jacket has now been protected for the future by the addition of a removable plastic sleeve.

Your antique copy of Mrs Beeton and her Husband will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message to the parcel.
