1932 A Treasury of Verse For School and Home - Colour Illustrations

In excellent condition, here is a lovely vintage hardback copy of A Treasury of Verse For School and Home. Published in 1932 by George Harrap & Company, London. With eight colour plates by Honor C Appleton and gorgeous Art Nouveau decorative boards.

A Treasury of Verse was one of a series of poetry anthologies compiled by M. G. Edgar and Eric Chilman in the 1920s and 1930s. These anthologies were designed for school and home use, bringing together a curated selection of English poetry suitable for children and older readers. They were widely used in British schools and often awarded as school prize books, which is why many surviving copies carry prize bookplates or inscriptions.

This copy has a wide-ranging scope of verses with everything from Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and the Owl and the Pussycat up to extracts from:
Tennyson; Longfellow; Thackeray; Shakespeare; Browning; Blake; Scott; Dickens and many more.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound with just occasional spotting. Ex Libris bookplate to the front paste down. One page has a tear, but not effecting any text. All eight colour plates are present as called for, and all in good condition. A little spotting to the closed outside edges.

Petrol-blue cloth over boards have sunshine yellow decoration to the front and spine, and eye-catching Art Nouveau paste down to the front. Owl design to the spine. All in top order. One small chip to the cloth at the spine head - but minor. Rubbing to the cloth on the corners to reveal boards beneath at the tips.
