I'm thrilled with this find of four first editions by Virginia Woolf. All published by the author and her husband Leonard at their Hogarth Press in London between 1931 and 1941. These hardbacks are 80-90 years old and so inevitably have some wear, but remain good copies.
Comprising: The Waves (1931); The Years (1937); Three Guineas (1938); and Between the Acts (1941).
Inside the pages have tanned - The Waves also has some spotting to the early pages and the Three Guineas has a heavier tanned front free endpaper. Three of the books have inked inscriptions on the front free endpapers, with The Years having a longer piece of verse. With a few folded/creased corners. The Waves has a small newspaper cutting affixed to the front free endpaper which has an early review of the work. Three Guineas has a black ink line on the bottom closed page edge (see close-up photo). The Waves has a partially cracked hinge at the beginning, not effecting the binding which remains good and strong. The books all have a very mild lean.
All bound in different shades of cloth covered boards with gilt titles. The cloth has tanned around the outside edges. The gilt titles are bright on three volumes, but have faded on The Waves. For The Years and Between the Acts the cloth is clean and smart. Between the Acts has some rubbing and some fraying to the cloth along the spine joints, with some small splits at the ends. The Waves has a faded strip on the front next to the fore-edge. Three Guineas has the most wear. You can see how much the cloth has darkened with time as there would have been a Boots sticker on the front which is now gone revealing the original, much lighter, yellow coloured cloth. With a bump to the top front corner. Has some loss and creasing to the cloth at the spine ends and some splits along the joints. With a few faint marks and scuffs on the rear board.
